Fire Detection Devices Make the Home Safe

Friday, August 13th, 2010

There are things that we need to be aware of to be able to protect our homes from the danger of fire.  We have to know how a fire starts, how to prevent it, and how to control or extinguish it.  When we learn more about fire, we would have a better chance of preventing it from happening and controlling it.  Basically, you can create fire when you combine three elements namely heat, fuel, and oxygen in the right mixture.  When one of these three is absent, a fire would not start.  In essence, you just need to prevent all three elements from coming together to avoid the risk of fire and you just have to remove at least one of the elements for fire suppression.

Accidents happen.  A fire may start when you leave your cooking unattended, you fell asleep while smoking a cigarette, you left a lit candle unattended, you plugged multiple electrical gadgets to a single outlet, or you left any electrical device on for a long time.  There are really so many ways in which a fire could accidentally start.  The worst thing that can happen is that a fire would start when you are sleeping or away from home and you did not have any fire detection devices installed that would warn you of the danger or send an alarm to the fire brigade.

Installing a fire alarm would be a great way of alerting everyone within hearing distance that there is a fire in your house.  These fire detection devices would help you act accordingly.  Of course, everyone in your household should know what to do in such an event.  There are things that you need to do when there is a fire emergency.  You need to call the fire brigade.  Leave the house, gather everyone in a safe distance from the fire, and make sure everyone is accounted for.  You need to determine if it is still possible for you to control or extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher or just wait for the fire brigade.

There are basically two kinds of fire alarms.  One is manually activated and the other is automatically activated.  Anyone can activate the manually operated one the moment he or she sees something burning.  The other device will automatically activate when it detects increased temperature, thermal heat, smoke, or an actual fire.  The fire detection device that automatically activates would offer better protection for you.  You could sleep peacefully at night knowing that you would be alerted to the danger by the fire alarm.  When there is smoke, it is usually because of fire.  A smoke alarm is also good for fire detection.  You can also install this on every room of your house.

Make sure that everyone knows the sound of the fire and smoke alarms.  Do not forget to replace all batteries in each unit once or twice a year.  Remember to have the devices inspected and serviced regularly to ensure that it is working properly.

How to Buy a Fire Extinguisher Online

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Fire extinguishers are the initial response to fire detection, as these are designed to tackle fires while they are still small and not yet spreading. They are effective in controlling fire before it inflicts further damage and serious injuries. This is why, it is crucial for home and business owners to equip their property with this kind of safety device.

One good way to buy a fire extinguisher is via the online market. Not only does this route provide you with ultimate convenience, it would also save you a lot of money because the online market offers much more competitive prices than the traditional market.

If you are not familiar about buying a fire extinguisher or shopping online, here are the steps you need to do in order for you to get the best quality fire extinguisher online.

Step 1 – Find a reputable online store

First thing is to find a reputable online store that sells high quality fire extinguishers. When you browse the net, search for stores that sell extinguishers with genuine BSi Kitemark, BS EN3 and BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment) certifications.

Do a quick probe on the store’s background and customer service by calling up their customer representative to see how well they handle concerns and queries. Another way would be to get in touch with former clients to find out if they were satisfied with the product they bought from the store.

Moreover, study about the store’s policies on shipping, fees, penalties, privacy, cancellations, returns, and refunds so you will not encounter any problem in the future. Make sure too that the store is equipped with high-tech secure system for credit card transactions to protect your credit card and personal information from hackers and thieves.

Step 2 – Determine the type of extinguisher to buy

As you probably know, fire extinguishers come in different kinds. You need to get the correct type so that you would be able to put out the fire effectively and not put yourself in danger. For most homes, the ideal extinguisher is the powder fire extinguisher, which can fight multi types of fires namely Class A (wood, clothing, paper), Class B (flammable liquids), and Class C (flammable gases).

For businesses, it is best that you determine first the nature of your business so you can find a suitable extinguisher. For example, if you have a computer shop or electrical appliances store, the best option would have to be CO2 fire extinguishers, the only extinguishers safe to use for electrical fires.

Step 3 – Place an order

After you determined the right extinguisher to buy, you can now submit your order by filling up an order form. You would need to put in your personal and credit card information to complete the purchase. You do not have anything to worry about if you have chosen to buy from a secure store. Wait for several days until your order arrives and do a thorough examination to see if it is in tiptop condition.

Of course, buying an extinguisher is not the end of this. Once you have made your purchase, you need to undergo trainings on how to use it properly so that when the time comes that an actual fire situation happens, you would know exactly how to respond to it.
